The virtuoso musical trio "Maharaj" will be visiting Stara Zagora with a training seminar and concert dedicated to the rich traditions of Indian classical music. The event will take place on June 23 at the Regional Library "Zachary Knyazheski". All the trio's events in Bulgaria are free of charge, thanks to the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

From 3:00 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the traditions of Indian classical music through a special seminar on the topic "Indian Classical Music - Raga, Sarod, Sitar, Tabla". The audience will learn more about the raga musical style and the characteristic Indian instruments sarod, sitar and tabla, which are among the most recognizable symbols of India's musical culture.

The trio's concert will begin at 6:00 p.m., presenting an authentic sound and virtuoso performances inspired by the centuries-old traditions of Indian music.

The trio is already visiting Bulgaria in September 2025 with concerts in Sofia, Plovdiv and other cities. After the extremely warm reception and strong interest from the audience, as well as the desire for new encounters with their music, with the assistance of the Embassy of the Republic of India in Bulgaria, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the East-West Indological Foundation, the musicians accepted the invitation to return to our country after their tour of Western Europe in May and June of this year.

The world-famous Trio Maharaj hails from the holy city of Varanasi, a thousand-year-old spiritual and cultural center in India. Pandit Vikash Maharaj, a renowned and respected virtuoso on the sarod, and his sons Prabhash Maharaj on the tabla and Abhishek Maharaj on the sitar, are members of a distinguished family that has preserved and developed the traditions of Indian classical music and traditional instruments for 500 years. With their emotional performances, intricate improvisations, and unparalleled virtuosity, the trio consistently captivates audiences. Their music, drawn from the sacred Vedic texts, serves as a profound testament to India’s rich musical heritage. Their performances around the world are as impressive as their mastery. Recognized by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) as cultural ambassadors, the musicians of Trio Maharaj have played on prestigious concert and festival stages in dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, and North and South America.

The center of the trio is Pandit Vikash Maharaj - a teacher in the tradition, a maestro of the classical string instrument sarod, highly recognized both in India and on the world stage. During his brilliant career, he has performed over 7000 concerts all over the world, participating in significant international events.

He has shared the stage with musicians of the stature of Herbie Hancock, Peter Gabriel, John McLaughlin, Ravi Shankar, George Harrison, Anushka Shankar and many other renowned names. His music has been heard in iconic cultural and spiritual spaces, including the Cologne Cathedral and the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, WOMAD Taranaki (New Zealand), the San Francisco Jazz Festival and many others. He was the first Indian sarod player to play at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo in 1989 and in 2008 he performed at the New Zealand Parliament.
Pandit Vikash Maharaj has been a visiting professor at a number of prestigious educational institutions around the world, including Berkeley Music College and San Diego City College in the USA, the Bach Music Academy in Germany, the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and others.

Pandit Vikash Maharaj himself admits: "For me, music is not just art, it is a means of fulfilling life. When the fingers glide over the sarod, then the mind passes into peace, and the soul merges with self-awareness."

Time spent in the harmony of music is never wasted... It is this time that gives balance, inner peace, and new energy for life.

Ragas, he says, are not just melodies, they are emotions that liberate – feel, be carried away, merge together.”

Prabhash Maharaj adds: "In every beat there is a story, in every rhythm there is a soul - eternal, unlimited, divine.", and Abhishek Maharaj summarizes: "Music is a bridge between the visible and the invisible - beyond sound, beyond time."

As part of its Bulgarian tour, Maharaj Trio will perform concerts and seminars in Sofia, Plovdiv and Burgas.

The event in Stara Zagora promises to be a unique encounter with the magic of Indian music - an experience that combines knowledge, tradition and art.
